Our home farm, which is situated 5km’s north-west of the town of Boyup Brook, is comprised of 1640 acres of what is considered some of the best country in the district. This lends it to the production of quality grass-fed beef.
Just because we are organic doesn’t mean we no longer use fertiliser, a commonly held view surrounding organics, we in fact soil test on a regular basis and apply organic fertilisers, and other natural soil amendments where required.
This means we are not “mining’ our soils and therefore farming on a more sustainable basis, through the use of natural products and through other management tools including cell-grazing.
Cell-grazing is where cattle are “rotated” through small paddocks on a regular basis, so decreasing the length of time stock are in one area. This allows for a longer “rest” period between grazing, which stimulates better plant growth, as well as decreasing the parasite burden within the herd, equalling healthier, happier cattle!!
As well as running our breeding herd we also “finish” our cattle on our home property and cut organic rye-grass hay to feed back out during the dry months, this ensures we have a quality product ready for market year–round.
